NITs (National Institutes of Technology) are premier public engineering colleges in India. They are just after the IITs in terms of importance.

Brief History

NITs started as Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) in 1959. After 2002, they were treated as sister institutes to the IITs. In 2007, by an Act of Parliament, NITs were declared as "Institutes of National Importance".

Admission

To get admission in B. Tech at NITs, you have to crack Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main.
