India has some of the famous and well-known engineering colleges and institutions in Asia and the world, such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and many other public and private sector institutions. The entrance exam for IITs allow admission to less than 2% of the total applicants and is essentially the starting cause for the difference between the IITs and other engineering colleges. The exam is generally conducted to know the intelligence of a person and acts as an aggregator of reasonably smart individuals from the country.
Specialisations
Engineering students generally prefer these disciplines and specialisations:
- Electronics & Communication Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Computer & Science Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Automobile Engineering
- Aeronautical Engineering
Ranking Procedure
Ranking of the institutions is done based on the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development)-approved NIRF's (National Institute Ranking Framework) criteria.
Admission
To begin with, to get into an engineering institute or college, you must pass a higher secondary examination with PCM (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics).
Additionally, for admission in undergraduate engineering courses (B.Tech or B.Arch), you have to crack national-level, state-level, or college-specific examinations such as JEE Advanced, JEE Main, BITSAT, VITEEE, MAHA CET, TS EAMCET, AP EAMCET BCECE, JCECE, Assam CEE, JKCET, WBJEE, and others.
