Bijapur



Bijapur is a city situated in Karnataka in southern India. The city is located 530 km to the northwest of Bangalore. Bijapur is among the most popular tourist destinations in South India. It is extremely famous for its great monuments built during the Mughal reign.

Jumma Masjid:


This is one of the largest mosques in Bijapur. The Jumma Masjid was constructed by Ali Adil Shah in 1558. The Mosque is built exclusively in Islamic style of architecture with elegant arches, a massive hall and a huge dome that is surrounded by thirty-three smaller domes.

Asar Mahal:


The Asar Mahal is also another celebrated tourist spot of Bijapur. It was built in 1646 by Mohammed Adil Shah. The monument served as a hall of Justice during the Mughal rule. It is believed that the building is also home to certain relics that belong to Prophet Muhammad. The Asar Mahal plays host to several festivals during the year which draws people from different parts of the country.

Malik-e-Maidan:


(The Monarch of the Plains) The Malik-e-Maidan is a one of a kind tourist attraction in Bijapur. It is the largest medieval cannon in the world. The gun weighs 55 tons and it is 4 m long and 1.5 m in diameter. It was carried back from Ahmadnagar as a symbol of victory after a war by 10 elephants, 400 oxen and ten men.

Ibrahim Rauza:


This is one of the most extraordinary tourist attractions in Bijapur. The Ibrahim Rauza is the tomb of Mughal ruler Ibrahim Adil Shah II. The tomb is a marvelous piece of architecture constructed on a single rock. It is believed that the design of this mausoleum was actually the inspiration behind Taj Mahal.

Gol Gumbaz:


The Gol Gumbaz is a world famous monument situated in Bijapur. It is the tomb of the Mughal ruler Mohammed Adil Shah. The tomb has several features that distinguish it from all other famous tombs in the world. The monument is the second largest dome in the world only after the St Peter's Basilica in Rome. The most striking feature of this monument is its central chamber known for the echoes that it produces.
