Mclaren automotive is a British company, founded by Bruce Mclaren in 1985. It has headquarters at the Mclaren Technology center, Woking, Surrey, UK. Earlier known as Mclaren cars, it was renamed Mclaren automotive in 2010. The company was registered as dormant between the years 1994 and 2010, before the institution of Mclaren Automotive in the latter year. The automobile manufacturer was established a standalone company in order to enable investment in the new venture. Finally in July 2017, the company became a 100 percent owned subsidiary of Mclaren group.

Mclaren’s first hybrid engine car Speedtail is a limited production model manufactured by it. A recent addition to the Mclaren Ultimate Series, this model succeeds cars like Senna, the P1 and the F1. The automobile is also a part of eighteen new vehicles known as Derivatives, that are to be launched as a part of Track 22 business plan by the company.

Speedtail was revealed to the world on October 26th, 2018 and was officially launched in February 2020.

McLaren Speedtail – Specifications

The Hyper-GT variant is going to be powered by a combination of the modified version of the M840T from 720S and a hybrid powertrain allowing it to reach and output of 1036 horsepower. The gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain makes it possible to achieve a speed of 186 Miles per hour in just 12.8 seconds. The monocoque chassis is made of carbon fibre and the passenger seats are integrated into it. The model comes with dihedral doors, like the other Mclarens.

Top speed of the Speedtail is claimed to be 402.3 kilometers per hour, and acceleration from 0 to 299 kilometers per hour takes 12.8 seconds, making it the fastest production car by Mclaren.

The car comes with the most unique feature of charging while driving. This is possible by the use of wireless charging pads, 4 of which are included in the car itself. These pads are able to trickle charge the battery when the car is stationary.

Other features include electro-chromatic glass that darkens just by pushing a button. This eliminates the need to use sun visors completely. Other than the glass, Speedtail also has LED lights incorporated in its interior. Sun visors aren’t the only thing that this car has eliminated ; the door mirrors are also replaced with HD cameras. They are mounted on the front guards and will pop out whenever the ignition is turned on except in the Velocity mode, in which they retract inside in order to reduce drag. The car is equipped with bespoke P-zero tyres by Pirelli. The front wheels have carbon static fibre covers, this also helps in the reduction of drag. Exterior features of the car include hydraulically operated rear ailerons, formed from flexible carbon fibre and an important part of the rear clamshell.

The model has a teardrop shaped cockpit similar to its predecessor the F1. It offers a three seat layout, in which the driving seat is at the centre and slightly forward and two passenger seats in the back. The directional leather finish used in the interior of the car is said to help in sliding in smoothly on the seat but then subtly hold the occupant in place they drive. The leather finish is also claimed by the company to be strong enough to use in place of carpet on the floor of Speedtail. Titanium deposit carbon fibre and Thin-ply technology carbon fibres are also used in the interior.

The vehicle was tested in the shuttle landing runway at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The testing also took place on the tracks in Germany and Spain.

There are only 106 models of the Speedtail that have been made by the auto manufacturer and all of them have already been sold, at an estimated amount of two million British Pounds. Due to the cameras in place of side mirrors and no side mounted airbags, the Speedtail has not been deemed as road-legal in the United States. With thirty five percent of buyers being from America, the company is trying to get approval by the NHTSA under the “show or display” law to make the vehicle legal. The said law exempts cars that hold historical or technological importance from the safety standards issued by the NHTSA. However, the law does state that such vehicles should not be driven more than two thousand five hundred miles in a period of twelve months. Mclaren has clearly refused to offer assistance in the registration as well as import of the Speedtail in the US. In the United Kingdom, the production of the Hyper-GT started recently, after the speed testing of the model was completed in December 2019. The deliveries of the first slot that is the one hundred and six cars, is slated for February 2020 to Woking, England.
