Bollywood Movie - Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan

Bollywood movie Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao

The much-awaited trailer of Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is out on YouTube.

The trailer opens with Ayushmann Khurrana having a conversation with a man about the time when he might have decided to become “that”. Which he exasperatedly counters saying, “Aapne kab decide kiya ki aap gay nahi banoge?”

Further, we are introduced to the respective families of the gay lovers. Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao, who came back as a couple after the very successful Badhaai Ho, plays Jitendra’s parents. After the news broke out, this very quotidian couple conduct themselves like any other middle-class parents would do – they decide to marry their son off with the hope that this phase too shall pass!

But just like a conventional heterosexual being, sexual orientation of not so conventional sexual people may also not be conventional.

The movie projects the entire concept of conformist parents not understanding homosexuality, and this has been shown comically but not at the cost of reducing the community into a mere joke.

Mostly, Hindi films have shown anything but not heterosexuals to be either effeminate or butch (masculine) and femme (feminine). But amongst several others, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan breaks the hackneyed idea of the body language of “gays”.

What adds to the charm is when we spot Khurrana donning a rainbow flag and a nath and shouting from the rooftop that their parents are homophobic.

An extension of Khurrana’s 2017 dramedy Shubh Mangal Saavdhan on erectile dysfunction, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is another effort to deliver a social message – this time on same-sex love.

Directed by Hitesh Kewalya, the film is set for release on February 21, 2020.
