A walk through Fort Kochi resurrects the idea of the colonial era, which began in the sixteenth century with the arrival of Portuguese missionaries in India. So old is the history of the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica in this port city. One of the oldest and the most prominent churches of India, the Santa Cruz cathedral is among the eight basilicas in the country. It is considered to be an important heritage site and the pride of Kochi.

The Santa Cruz Cathedral came into existence originally in the year 1558 with the construction of a Catholic building by the Portuguese Missionaries.  It was demolished by the British, who later erected a new building in the year 1887. Pope John Paul II proclaimed it as a Basilica in the year 1984 because of its antiquity and historical value. The Church is well-known for its splendid beauty and architectural brilliance. A blend of Indo-European and Gothic style has been used in the construction of this magnificent structure. The interiors have been embellished with Italian Paintings dating back to the time of its original foundation.

The Santa Cruz Cathedral is regarded highly, not only as a place of worship, but also as an important historical edifice. Thousands of believers as well as tourists are seen visiting the church throughout the year.
