Tabo


On the way to Nako from Shichling there is a picturesque small town called Tabo. As the car moves through the meandering roads from Shichling to Nako you will reach this town after a drive of about 86 kilometers.

Tabo is the ancient city of Spiti known for its rich cultural heritage. It is located at an altitude of about 3050 meters above sea level. This picturesque city is the home to the most famous monastery in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.

The one thousand year old monastery of Tabo is the second most important monastery in the world. First one being the sacred Tholling Gompa in Tibet. This religious site is also famous for its architectural splendor. It is built in the style in which the Gompas are built in the western part of Tibet.

The monastery is also famous for the rich paintings that ornament the walls. There are frescoes on the life of The Buddha adorning all the walls in the interior of this religious site in Himachal Pradesh. Most of these murals are carefully preserved in their original forms.

The Tabo monastery is popularly referred to as 'Ajanta of Himalayas'. It is one of the most interesting places to see around Manali.
