Guru Nanak Jayanti or the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev, the first guru of the Sikhs is celebrated in the month of Kartik as per the Hindu calendar.
The parallel time in the Gregorian calendar is between the months of October and November. Guru Nanak’s Birthday is another occasion for celebration after a long line of festivals in the month of October-November.
Guru Nanak Jayanti gives an occasion to the people to recall the teachings of Guru Nanak which form the core of Sikh values and the way of life and belief.
The occasion is marked by reciting hymns in praise of Guru Nanak Dev and distribution of Langar (free food) in the Gurudwaras.
