Ghaziabad is a major industrial hub in North India. The city also serves as the administrative headquarters of the district of the same name. Previously, the city formed a part of the Meerut district following the freedom of the country. Because of its developed transportation infrastructure, it is dubbed as the Gateway of Uttar Pradesh.

It is in Uttar Pradesh and is situated around 1.5 km from the eastern part of the Hindon river. Ghaziabad is surrounded by Delhi and Meerut. The headquarters of the Ghaziabad district is located over here.

The city is named after its founder, Ghazi-ud-din. Initially it was known as Ghaziuddinnagar, however, afterwards the name was changed to Ghaziabad. Area and population of Ghaziabad



As stated by the census performed in 1991, the district covered a total area of 2590.0 km2. Nevertheless, following the creation of Gautam Budh Nagar, a new district, the area has expanded to 1933.3 km2.

According to the data provided by 2011 census, the number of people living in the district is 4,661,452, which makes it the third most populated district in Uttar Pradesh. The population comprised 2,481,803 men and 2,179,649 women. The district represents about 2.33% of the overall number of people living in Uttar Pradesh.

The density of population is the maximum (Number 1) in the state and the population density is 4060/sq km. In terms of rate of increase in population, the city holds the 2nd rank and the rate is 40.66%. In 2011, the mean literacy rate was 85% and it was the maximum in the state.

The population of the city has grown mostly because of its industrial development and closeness to Delhi, the capital of India.

Since it is closely located to the capital of the country, the weather conditions (temperature and precipitation) are akin to Delhi. The weather is characterized by three major seasons and they are winter, summer, and rainy season.
