The Festival of Cradle is one of the most popular festivals of Madurai. During this festival, the city comes alive with a number of festivities. The festival is related to Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Shiva, the titular deities of the city.
During the festival of Cradle, Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar are taken to a mirror chamber. The deities are taken to the chamber in a huge procession. Lord Shiva and Goddess Meenakshi are placed in a swing for nine days. The swing is made to rock gently, while the deities rest on it.
