Sikkim - Gangtok city



Introduction



Sikkim is a north eastern state of India and Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim. It is also the largest city in the state. Situated on the Shivalik hills, it is found at the height of 5,600 feet in the south east of the Sikkim state. Gangtok, which in the local language means "hill top" is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the country.
Gangtok is also the largest city in Sikkim nestled within the peaks of the Himalaya. The place is situated between the latitudes of 27 degree 5 'north to 20 degree 9 'north and longitudes of 87 degree 59' east to 88 degree 56' east. Gangtok is also the headquarters of East Sikkim districts. Kanchenjunga, the third tallest peak in the world can be seen from the east side of the city.

Gangtok is now a very popular place in terms of tourism and has seen many hospitals and monastery that one needs to visit during the visit. Various colleges like the Sikkim Govt. The college are well established here. The Deoarli Girls School is also a very popular education organization for girls. The PNG School and the High Secondary schools are also a favorite among the locals. Large hospitals like the Manipal Hospital are built here to take care of the people in Gangtok. Popular Monastery can be found like the Chorten Monastery, Do Drul Chorten Monastery and Enchey monastery. There is also a Gurudwara in Gangtok. Transport in Gangtok



Gangtok is well connected to all the major cities and towns. Although it is situated on hilly region, one can get well connected by rail, air and road. The place has a good network of roadways and connects various places and towns nearby. There are numerous buses that ply daily from Siliguri to Gangtok. National Highway NO 31A runs through the city of Gangtok and is well connected to the rest of the country. The highway also connects to Darjeeling and Kalimpong. The map here shows the road prominently that is useful while traveling in the city and outside. The 1 km long Cable cars are used widely to move around the town. The cable car takes 3 stops like the lower Gangtok suburbs, Sikkim legislative assembly and the Upper suburbs. One can easily reach various places like the hospitals, schools, colleges, offices in the city of Gangtok.

The nearest railway station is situated at 148 kms in Jalpaiguri and is a 4 hour drive from Gangtok and has a great railway network that connects it to various Indian cities.

If you want to travel faster, airways are a better option. Gangtok is well connected with most airports in the country by helicopters. Daily helicopter service is available once a day that can carry four passengers. The nearest airport is Bagdogra, which is near Siliguri and at a distance of 124 km from Gangtok. Other major cities that the airways are connected are Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati. However, a new airport called the Pakyong airport is under construction and will be operational in 2013.
