Tram Services to Begin in Greater Noida

Greater Noida is all set to witness its first-ever tram service that will run alongside the Greater Noida expressway from Sector 143 to Sector 137. These two sectors will essentially be connected by the two Metro Stations which will be built in these respective areas. The plan of setting up the first-ever tram services in the city came up due to the fact that the Metro network cannot cover cities extensively and more options were needed so as to cater to the needs of the people putting up in the residential areas. Thus, the best option that the authorities came up with was the tram service network which is cost-effective, eco-friendly, and also can be developed in a short span of time.

Providing Good Connectivity Options

The Greater Noida authorities have chalked out a plan to set up a tram service to provide good connectivity options in the city. The tram service would be linked to the Metro network of Noida. The pilot line which has been proposed from Sector 143 (Mahamaya flyover) to sector 137 will cover a distance of almost twelve kilometers, while the second route being planned is likely to cover twenty five kilometers, up to Sector 93.

Another route that is also being proposed is a seven kilometer stretch connecting from Sector 12/22 to Sector 62. It will stretch along the Master Plan-I Road to NIB crossing and would thereby touch NH-24 too, traversing via the Khoda Colony of Greater Noida. The third route being proposed is a stretch from the Botanical Garden Metro station of Noida via Golf Course Metro Station. It would eventually lead to City Centre Metro station. Several of such routes have been proposed which will connect many institutional, residential and commercial sectors of the city thereby establishing the ‘last mile connectivity’.

The consultants of the project, Urban Mass Transit Company, have estimated that the cost of constructing such an extensive tram network can cost almost Rs 10-15 crore per km, however, the actual costs can only be concluded once the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is finalised. The Detailed Project Report, along with a detailed feasibility plan and draft of Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for the cities, Noida and Greater Noida, are already in the pipeline for assessment.

All of these ‘Plans’ and ‘Reports’ are being assessed after effectively studying the same kind of tramways network of the European countries. The main objective of coming up with such kind of transportation system is to provide the last mile connectivity in the city.

As per the officials, the work on the Comprehensive Mobility Plan had commenced a year ago just after the Urban Mass Transit Company was given the task of creating a blueprint of the entire plan. On 7 July 2015, many observations were made by the authorities working on the project, in the draft CMP. The CMP is likely to be finalised once these observations and the required changes will be incorporated in the plan of action. The Noida traffic cell will approve the final draft CMP before submitting the same to the Ministry of Urban Development for further assessment and approval.
