The art of film-making inspires the directors to explore their competencies in different genres and biopics are one of their favourites. Not many of them ventured into this domain in the earlier times as the audience was not much appreciative about such movies. But with the changing scenario, biopics seem to have found their place in Bollywood. A good number of biopics released in the past few years have not only been accepted by the audience but have also become Bollywood blockbusters.

1. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
One of the best biopics ever made in Bollywood, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is the story of Milkha Singh, also known as the Flying Sikh of India. It is an inspiring tale of hard work and belief that glorifies the life of the legendary athlete. Actor Farhan Akhtar absolutely nailed the role!
2. Mangal Pandey: The Rising
Based on the life and times of a soldier in the 1857 Indian Mutiny, the film highlighted the events that unfolded the fight for independence. Actor Aamir Khan delivered a stellar performance in his role as Mangal Pandey. The film didn’t fair well at the box-office but received several critical acclaims.
3. Paan Singh Tomar
Starring Irrfan Khan, one of the gems of Bollywood, Paan Singh Tomar is a biopic on an Indian soldier and accomplished athlete, who gave up a career in the armed forces and went on to become a dacoit owing to a land dispute. The movie successfully unfolds various real-life incidents that forced him to take this dark step.
4. Jodhaa Akbar
Released in 2008, this inspiring love story depicted the relationship between the Mughal Emperor Jalaluddin Akbar and his Hindu wife Jodha! The movie starred Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the main leads. It did fantastically well on box-office, grossing over a hundred crore.
5. The Dirty Picture
Inspired by the South-Indian actress Silk Smitha, this is one of the boldest biopics ever made in Bollywood. Actress Vidya Balan took up the role of Silk Smitha and delivered an overpowering performance! The film won many accolades from the critics who appreciated this bold move.
6. Bose- The Forgotten Hero
An impressive piece on the life of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, the film highlighted his role in the freedom struggle. Actor Sachin Khedekar was finalised to play the role of this inspiring freedom fighter. It is one of the most well-directed films of Bollywood.
7. Bandit Queen
Bandit Queen is a biopic on Phoolan Devi, a rebel who rose to become a politician. The film depicted the brutalities faced by her that forced her to become a dacoit. The role of Bandit Queen was given to Seema Biswas, who managed to carry it well.
One of the recent releases in Bollywood, the film narrated the story of a famous lawyer and Human Rights Activist, Shahid Azmi who worked for those who were wrongly charged in the cases of terrorism. Having served the jail for the same reason, he sought out to help others but was unfortunately shot dead. Actor Rajkumar Rao delivered a breath-taking performance as Shahid!
9. Rang- Rasiya
Surrounded by many controversies, the film depicted the story of Raja Ravi Verma, one of the most well-known painters of the past. He was known for his spectacular fusion of the Indian Art with the European styles. Though the film mounted several controversies for its bold scenes, it was acknowledged for its good direction and an outstanding performance by the actors.
One of the most appreciated films on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, it was directed and produced by an English actor and director, Richard Attenborough. The film won many accolades in the Academy Awards, including one for the best film. Sir Ben Kingsley portrayed the role of Gandhi in the film.
