Describe the events that took place in Sikkim from the time of India’s independence to its merger with India.

Ans.

  1. Sikkim’s Autonomy: After India’s independence in 1947, Sikkim remained an independent monarchy under the Chogyal (king). It maintained its autonomy with limited control over its internal affairs, while India handled its external defense and foreign relations.

  2. Growing Unrest: In the 1970s, political unrest and demands for democracy grew in Sikkim, fueled by dissatisfaction with the Chogyal’s rule and allegations of corruption. Pro-democracy movements gained momentum, leading to protests and calls for reforms.

  3. India’s Intervention: In 1973, the Indian government intervened in Sikkim’s affairs, deploying troops to maintain law and order. Talks between India and Sikkim’s government failed to resolve the crisis, leading to escalating tensions and further unrest.

  4. Merger with India: Amidst growing instability, the Chogyal requested India’s assistance, leading to a referendum in 1975. The referendum resulted in a majority vote in favor of abolishing the monarchy and integrating Sikkim into India as its 22nd state. Sikkim officially became a part of India on May 16, 1975, marking the end of its monarchy and the beginning of its journey as an Indian state.
