Bada Imambara Lucknow

Bada Imambara, Lucknow – An exquisite example of Mughal Architecture

Bada Imambara – The name itself speaks about the grandeur of this masterpiece that cannot be missed out once you are in Lucknow. Every segment of its structure has a story to narrate and to honour its builder, Asaf-ud-Daulah (then the Nawab of Awadh), this shrine is also called as Asafi Imambara or Imambara-e-Asafi. One of the many stories associated with this magnificent structure narrates about the Nawab’s generosity. Awadh was hit by a severe famine and to ensure employment for both the commoner and elite who were then in need of work, the construction of Bada Imambara was initiated. Till the time famine lasted the construction continued.

The main complex consists of a large, vaulted central chamber, with no beams supporting its ceiling and is revered as one of the largest arched constructions in the world! A three-dimensional labyrinth or bhool bhulaiya with dark corridors and 489 identical doorways is fascinating yet requires courage or a guide to be explored or you’ll be lost. The 60 feet tall, embellished gateway called Rumi Darwaza, the Asfi Mosque and surrounding lush gardens cannot be left unnoticed.

Capture the mesmerizing beauty and glory of Bada Imambara on your next visit to Lucknow. Just beware of touts.
