Lucknow, popularly known as the city of Nawabs, is the centre of the Shia Muslims in India. Being one of the historic cities of India, the architectures found in this city mostly are Nawabi in their style. Lucknow is not only the heartland of the Shia Muslims but also the abode of Dargah of Hazrat Abbas.

Located in Rustam Nagar area of Lucknow, Dargah of Hazrat Abbas was constructed by Nawab Saadat Ali Khan in the year 1798. According to the popular belief, an Indian Muslim brought Hazrat Abbas’s sacred Alam to Lucknow, after having a dream about it. The Dargah was constructed in the house of this poor man after the news of this miracle spread out wide.

Nawab Saadat Ali Khan, later on, gilded the dome of the Dargah and also built separate enclosures for men and women. In the later years, a huge double-storied gateway was constructed by Nawab Ghazi ud din Haider. He also provided silver-foiled doors to the inner sanctum where the holy Alam was preserved. Malka Zamani, one of the Begums during the Nawab’s rule, started a free kitchen at the site for the poor. It is also said that during independence, the Dargah was the centre of the Indian Soldiers against the British.

People from every religious belief come to the Dargah of Hazrat Abbas to offer prayers with much respect. The atmosphere, specially during Nauchandi Jumerat, is extremely holy and enlightening. A visit to Dargah of Hazrat Abbas bestows immense calm and peace to the mind.
