Taragarh

Lying on the foothills of the Dhauladhar Mountains, the region of Taragarh is spread over the sprawling acres of tea plantation. Surrounded by the imposing mountain ranges, the region provides a spectacular and picturesque view of the snowcapped peaks of the western Himalayas. The region is situated at a distance of 190 kilometers from the city of Manali and has attained a primary position as one of the chief places to see around Manali.

The region of Taragarh is situated on the Pathankot-Mandi Road that is well connected to the major cities in Himachal Pradesh. The surface transport is available from the various cities that traverse the region. Nawab Sadiq Mohammed Khan Bahadur who was the ruler of Bahawalpur had constructed the Taragarh palace as his summer resort in the year 1931. The palace and the region were later acquired by the royal family of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir in 1951 and awarded as a gift to the widowed queen Tara Devi. The palace has presently been converted into a palatial resort.

While on a tour of Taragarh, the tourists may visit the Tashijong Monastery that is a chief pilgrim spot of the Budhhist people who reside in this region. Situated at an elevated surface, the monastery present a spectacular view of the Kangra valley. Lying on the confluence of the Banganga and the Pataalganga rivers, the Kangra fort is of mythological and archaeological importance. Built almost 5 centuries earlier, the magnificent fort stands in all its grandiosity close to the region of Taragarh.
