Death toll reaches 55 due to floods in Assam, Meghalaya

Around 55 people have died so far due to the floods and landslides in the northeast states of Assam and Meghalaya. As per media reports, large number of people have been displaced due to the landslides and flash floods in the region. Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said the floods are the worst in the recent times and the bad weather conditions are obstructing the rescue operations. According to media reports, the state of Assam has been put on high alert after 20 people have reportedly died due to the landslides and several incidents of drowning. It is also reported that hundreds of people have been forced to stay and live on the roofs of their homes or trees to save themselves from the raging waters.

Floods hit Assam and Meghalaya in north-east India

The heavy rains in the last 48 hours have resulted in floods and landslides in various districts of the north east states of Assam and Meghalaya. As per media reports, seven people have died in Meghalaya and three in Assam. It is also reported that the MeT department has warned that heavy rains could continue in the next 24 hours at some places in the states. The incessant rains have led to the massive floods due to which schools and colleges have been shut in Guwahati, Assam. Rescue operations have been started the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Border Security Force and the Army to save people and move them to safer places.
