Governor of Goa


The Governor of Goa is the constitutional head and represents the President of India in the state of Goa. The President of India nominates him or her for tenure of five years.

At present, His Excellency Kateekal Sankaranarayanan is the Governor of the Indian state of Goa. Before becoming the 15th governor of the state, Shri Sankaranarayanan served as the Governor of Jharkhand and Nagaland.

Mr. Sankaranarayanan moved into the domain of politics when he was a student. He was a dynamic participant in the student movements which took place since 1946.

Before becoming a governor, he was given a portfolio of a cabinet minister in various Congress governments in Kerala, under the Chief Ministership of K. Karunakaran and A. K. Antony.

From May 26, 2001 to August 29, 2004He was given the portfolio of Ministry of Finance in the cabinet of Shri. A.K. Antony.
Till February 10, 2004, Sankaranarayanan also oversaw the Department of Excise.

Gubernatorial career of K. Sankaranarayanan



Mr. K. Sankaranarayanan was given the additional responsibility of the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh when S. K. Singh, the then governor of the state quit the position in 2007. Mr. Sankaranarayanan took oath as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh (additional charge) on April 7, 2007. On August 19, 2007, when Mr. S.K. Singh was subsequently designated as the Governor of Rajasthan, Mr. Sankaranarayanan was designated as governor of the state on September 4, 2007.

Mr. Sankaranarayanan held office as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh till the month of January 2008 while the appointment to the post was given to Joginder Jaswant Singh. In 2009, he was given the charge of the Governor of Assam.

K. Sankaranarayanan took oath as the Governor of Maharashtra on January 22, 2010. He received additional charge of Goa on August 27, 2011.

Sankaranarayanan, who received the additional charge of the smallest state in India as a result of the gubernatorial reallocation in August, will continue the fresh job till the conclusion of his tenure which is slated for January 2015.

Responsibilities and authorities of Governor of Goa



The Governor of Goa enjoys the following authorities and powers:
  • Legislative powers associated with enacting laws and the state legislative assembly, i.e. Vidhan Parishad or Vidhan Sabha
  • Executive powers associated with governance, selections and exclusions of officials
  • Discretionary powers to be performed in line with the judgment of the Governor.

Ex Officio Powers of Governor of Goa



The ex officio (by virtue of position) powers of the Governor of Goa are given below:
  • The Governor of Goa serves as the ex-officio President of the Indian Red Cross Society, Goa division. He also has the authority to elect the Honorable Secretary and Chairman of the organization.

  • He also serves as the Chancellor of the Goa University and applies his authorities entrusted by the Goa University Act, 1984 and the legislative acts of the Goa University.
  • He serves as the Chairman of the Special Fund for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of War Veterans and Widows.

  • He also serves as the President of the Goa State Environment Protection Council. It is essentially a Consultative Organization, established by the Goa Government. The Council comprising public bodies and the Non Governmental Organizations is involved in ecological and associated domains, convenes once every six months and moots on different matters related to the ecological aspects of Goa state.

Since 1969, K. Sankaranarayanan has from the very beginning been a vanguard of the Indian National Congress in Kerala.
