Trilokpuri in East Delhi reels under communal tension

Since Diwali (October 23), communal tension has gripped east Delhi’s Trilokpuri area resulting in stone-pelting and firing incidents, which left dozens of people injured, with five of them sustaining bullet injuries. The police has arrested over 60 people for rioting in the area which has caused damage to property worth crores, with the riotous mobs torching several shops and vehicles.

The tension erupted in the area with the two communities fighting among themselves late on last Thursday over Diwali rituals in B-Block. They started pelting stones at one another. Though the police rushed to the area and pacified the people, the situation aggravated when some people again started pelting stones on Friday on the members of another community.

The situation remained tense on Saturday too. Blocks 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 28 29 were identified as the worst affected by the violence. The police imposed Section 144 in the area known as a resettlement colony, and deployed over 30 police vans comprising Delhi Police, Rapid Action Force and Central Reserve Police Force personnel, equipped with water cannons and riot control vehicles.

The Delhi police appears not to have paid sufficient heed to the intelligence agencies’ warning of the possibility of communal clashes during the festival season.
