The Almora district is a district of Uttarakhand and is located at 29.62°N 79.67°E. Perched on a ridge at the southern edge of the Kumaon Hills in the Himalayas range, Almora has an average elevation of 1651 meters.
It is observed that the district acquires a shape of a horse saddle shaped hillock. Surrounded by the thick forests of pine and fir trees, the city is neighbored rivers of Kochi and Suyal. Almora got its name from a plant, Kilmora, growing there in the region. Located over 5400 feet from the sea level, the Almora district is surely a place with great weather, which is cold most of the times, with occasional rain. The 1190 square meter area of Almora district is large enough for people with different culture and religion to live here happily, and have a comfortable life. Almora is surrounded by other districts of Uttaranchal including Bageshwar and Chamoli on Northern side, Pauri on western side, Nainital on southern and Champawat on the eastern side.

The district of Almora is divided into nine tehsils namely

Almora is a town in the Almora mandal in the district of Almora in Uttaranchal. In addition, it is the main town in the Almora Mandal and the district headquarter also. Almora is just at a distance of 176 km from Dehrdun, capital city of Uttaranchal. Some of the nearest towns and villages include Kasun, Pali, Kapina, Takula, Shail, Bhaiusiya Chhana, Takula, and Tarikhet among others.


Almora is known for large collection of Hindu temples situated in different towns where Jageshwar is very famous Hindu pilgrimage.


Ranikhet is a quiet town, 50 kms from Almora, known for its salubrious climate and panoramic views. It is located at an altitude of 1869 meters. It is home to famous Hindu temples such as Jhoola Devi Mandir, Ram Mandir, Herakhan Mandir, Kalika Temple and Binsar Mahadeva.


Located at 29.78°N 79.43°E, Dwarahat has an average elevation of 1,510 meters (4954.068 feet). It is town and Nagar Pnachayat in Almora District.


Located on the banks of river Ramganga, Chaukhutia is a small town in the Almora district. Since it is accessed from four ways namely Ramnagar, KaranPrayaga, Ranikhet and Almora, it is given name Chukhutia where Chau-khat means four ways in Kumaoni.


Someshwar, known for its ancient Shiva temple, is a small town in Almora district at a distance of 35 km from Almora.


Located at a distance of 54 kms from Ranikhet, Masi is a small village in Almorqa district.
