George Town, Chennai

George Town incorporates some of the crowded market places of Chennai. It is situated along the eastern coastal plains and distinguished by the Chennai Port and the coast of Bay of Bengal. It serves as the commanding post of Chennai city, which actually developed from this tiny commercial center.

George Town is currently a prime commercial area of the city. It is connected to the rest of the city by an excellent network of roads and railways.

Burma Bazar near Raja Salai Road is one of the shopping place in George Town. The place is rather congested and is marked with heavy traffic.

Although the Broadway Bus Stand and High Court Bus Stand offer easy commutation, overcrowding is a common problem for both.

George Town is linked to the suburbs by railways. The principal railway station, that is Chennai Central, lies within close proximity of George Town. The airport closest to George Town is Chennai Airport, about 16 kilometers away.

Superior quality, pure mulberry silk is a specialty of Tamil Nadu. Sarees from the temple town of Kanchipuram are famous for their sheen and dazzling hues. Be prepared for a tough decision as sales assistants spread roll after roll of splendid materials at your feet. Handloom House, at 7 Rattan Bazar in George Town (Phone: 25384840), is the most important saree store here, flaunting a vast collection of exquisite silks and cottons.

George Town is one of the most important areas of Chennai, and serves as a popular shopping destination for tourists and residents alike.
