What is mechanical engineering?
Mechanical engineering deals with the application of the law of physics related to designing, analyzing and manufacturing of the mechanical production and systems. The field is associated with designing machines and assembling engines, power plants, vehicles and structures of various kind and size. Mechanical engineering is all about kinematics, mechanics, energy, fluid mechanics, motor vehicles, aircraft, robotics, medical devices and other systems. It is one of the core engineering disciplines in the world.
To be a mechanical engineer you have to earn a degree in mechanical engineering with B.E or B. Tech degree from a reputed and recognized college or institution. The certificate can also be earned by completing a diploma in mechanical engineering.
One can also go for further studies and earn a master's degree in mechanical engineering.
For an undergraduate degree, the candidate should have passed 10+2 exam with mandatory subjects like physics, math and chemistry. To earn a diploma course, the candidate should have passed 10th class. However, both the degrees need candidates to have at least 50% aggregate marks in the final exam. Students may have to also appear for entrance exams conducted by various universities individually.
The degree course of mechanical engineering is four years, upon completion of which, candidates will earn a B.E. or B.Tech. degree in mechanical engineering. The degree course comprises eight semesters. The diploma comprises six semesters and is completed in three years. Some of the specializations in this branch of engineering include mechanics, thermodynamics and thermo-science, kinematics, structural analysis, rapid prototyping, mechanics, thermodynamics and thermo-science, computer-aided design and manufacturing, production engineering, turbo machinery and combustion systems, mechatronics and robotics, computational fluid dynamics and acoustics, tribology, nanotechnology and micro-electro mechanical systems.
Colleges offering mechanical engineering courses
All the IITs in India provides mechanical engineering in their course study. They also conduct a separate entrance exam called IIT JEE. The other reputed colleges are NIT, BITS Pilani, Delhi Technological University, Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute, K.J. Somaiya College of engineering, state level colleges, etc.
Scope and career in Mechanical engineering
Mechanical engineering is a vast field as it is involved in various other disciplines of engineering too. Graduates in this field are employed in the private sector as well as government jobs in CPWD, posts and telegraphs, defense and PWD. One can also have a factory or industry of his own. There is a wide variety of jobs available all over the country and abroad. The other sectors where a mechanical engineer can work is automobiles, electronics, chemical power plants, space research institute, aerospace, railways, agriculture, and research sectors.
Some of the reputed firms that employ graduates are Tata Motors, Maruti, Ashok Leyland, Hero Honda, Mahindra and Mahindra, Bajaj Auto, etc., while among the international firms are Toyota, Volkswagen, Honda, Ford, etc.
The salaries are very attractive and one with a graduation certificate can earn handsomely. The basic salary will start from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 20,000 per month. Government pay-scales differ according to position. Companies that are multinational can pay around Rs. 30,000 or more. Consulting jobs also fetch high income. With more experience and skills in the field, one can earn as much as Rs. 1,00,000 per month.
