What is electronic and communication engineering (ECE)?

ECE combines many aspects of civil, structural and electrical engineering. The field comprises various technologies that provide access to communication using modern electronic technology and devices. Research and development of satellite, design, cable systems, radio waves, mobile phones, internet, etc. are some of the fields that ECE engineers work in.

How to be an electronics and communication engineer?

To be an electronics and communication engineer, you have to earn a degree in B.E./B.Tech. or a diploma in electronic and communication engineering. The degree is a four-year course and the diploma is of three years.

One can go on to take up further studies like M.E. or M.Tech. as well.

Qualification

Candidates have to pass 10th class with 50% aggregate marks if you want to earn a diploma course. But for a degree course you need to pass 12th class in science stream, with 50% aggregate marks. The compulsory subjects are physics, math and chemistry.

Candidates have to appear for the entrance exam held by various boards and universities. If the candidate scores the required marks, he will be enrolled in that university.

Academic program

As mentioned above, the degree course is four years and comprises eight semesters. The degree course comes with various subjects that are of importance to the field. The core subjects are electrical circuits, electronics, digital signal, microprocessors and embedded systems, optical systems, electromagnets, communication systems, signals and systems, and VLSI. The other subjects are applied math, chemistry, physics, computer programming, basic electrical and electronic engineering, and others.

Subjects get changed according to the semesters.

Colleges

To enroll in any college, candidates have to appear for an entrance exam that is conducted by corresponding universities. All the IITs conduct the JEE entrance exam every year to admit students to the programs. Besides, there are other national-level entrance exams like NIT, BITS Pilani, and state-level exams as well.

Scope and job prospects

You can find plenty of job options for a degree holder in electronic and communication engineering. He/she can work in central government or state government or their sponsored firms or even the private firms like All India Radio, MTNL, Post and Telegraph, National Physical Laboratory, Bharat Electronics Limited, AIR, Civil Aviation Department, and many more.

Today these engineers are absorbed in entertainment, research, and defense as well. Teaching profession is also an attractive option that can be taken up in any prestigious college in various parts of the country.

Jobs are plenty even in developed countries, so candidates who wish to work abroad also have a wide scope. Some of the top recruiters are BEL, Texas instruments, Siemens, Philips electronics, Samsung, Infosys, TCS, Accenture, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Intel, Nvidia, Motorola, ISRO, Flextronics, and many more.

There are many small and large companies that hire engineers on a large scale according to experience.

Remuneration

The pay scale depends on the organization and work area. The more educated and experienced engineers will definitely earn a better salary. The average engineer can earn around Rs. 20,000 to 30,000 per month. With a little experience, the salaries will increase up to Rs. 70,000. A position at the senior level can earn you around Rs. 1.5 lakh or more a month.
