| Overview/History | Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated as a National Holiday in India to mark the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the 'Father of the Nation'. Gandhi was born on 2nd October 1869; therefore each year Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on this day. It is observed in all states and union territories of India as one of the three official declared National Holidays of India. On 15 June 2007, The United Nations General Assembly announced that October 2nd will be celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi had a natural love for 'truth' and 'duty'. With his complete dedication and confidence, Gandhi freed India from the British Rule and proved the world that freedom can be achieved with non-violence. Even today his teachings are encouraged to stay away from violence and find peaceful solutions to conflicts. For Gandhi, Truth and Non-violence was his entire philosophy of life. |
| Celebration | Mahatma Gandhi was a man with simple tastes and values. With keeping that in mind and giving him full honour and respect the festivities on this day are very less. The President and the Prime Minister, along with other political leaders, pay homage at Raj Ghat, the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi. To honour Gandhi's respect for all religions and communities, representatives from different religions take part in the prayer meeting held at Raj Ghat. Prayers and Verses are read out from Holy books of all religions. Mahatma Gandhi's favourite song 'Raghupati Raghava' is customarily sung at all meetings associated with him. Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated all over the country and in both government and non-government organizations.
