Overview/History

The Puri Beach Festival is celebrated each year at Puri, Orissa in the month of November and lasts for about five days. In recent years, the beach festival has gained popularity as tourists from all over the country visit here during the Festival. Lots of entertaining events like exhibitions, fashion shows, cultural programs, delicious cuisine, etc are organized for the visitors. As per tourism prospects the Puri Beach Festival has always had a good response. The festival provides an opportunity for the locals to showcase their talent and prosperous culture to the visitors.

The very first Puri Beach Festival was inaugurated on 29th October 1993 by Late Sri Biju Pattnaik, a dynamic leader of Odisha along with Gulam Nabi Ajad, union minister for tourism being the first beach festival of the country. The beach festival is organized by Hotel Association of Puri (HAP) in association with, Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India, Department of Tourism & Culture, Government of Odisha, Song & Drama Division, EZCC, New Delhi, Kolkata and ICCR.

Celebration

The main aim of the Puri Beach festival is to present the culture, art, craft, sports, cuisines and tourism of Orissa along with other states on a single platform. The Puri Beach Festival offers a captivating and enchanting experience of all. From cultural events, classical and folk dance performances, handicrafts and food festivals to rock concerts, beach parties, sand sculptures and fashion shows, the Puri Beach Festival has almost everything for every age group.

The venue of the festival i.e. the Puri Beach becomes a pilgrimage in itself. Every day at the festival is filled with music and dance performances, be it classical or contemporary. Shopping in Puri beach for traditional handicrafts is a good experience. There are also cultural evenings with performers from classical, folk & contemporary dance forms. Traditional beach sports like beach volleyball, Kabadi, Malkhamb (pole gymnastics) are also played. Sand Art & Regatta (boat or yacht races) are also quite popular at the festival.
