The foundation stone for airport in Surat was laid by the then Union Finance Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh. The airport was inaugurated on 6th May of 2007. This airport in Surat was set up not only to aid in communication but also to help in the industrial growth of the state.
Surat airport is situated near Magdalla in the Surat-Dumas Road. The total area occupied by the airport of Surat is about 312 hectare. The runaway of this airport stretches for 14000 meter. The flight operating from airport of Surat is Indian Airlines. This airline company operated the first flight to the airport of Surat. The average expense of air ticket ranges from Rs 2,995 to Rs 15,000 if one has to travel to Delhi from Surat. At one point of time, flights were operated by Gujarat Airways and Vayudoot.
Initiatives for upgradation of Surat airport was taken by the government of Gujarat. It is expected that contributions from private sectors will also be required in development process of the airport.
