US Congress in 1935 made a Proclamation to declare the first Sunday of August as a holiday in US in the honor of friends. The first International Friendship Day was proposed in 1958 in Paraguay. Since then, World Friendship Day is celebrated every year on the first Sunday of August.

The profound idea of celebrating Friendship Day was enthusiastically accepted by several other countries across the world. This practice of celebrating the beautiful bond of Friendship is still continued in the contemporary times.

July30 was declared as the official International Friendship Day by the Unite Nations General Assembly in 2011. However it is celebrated on the first Sunday of August in countries like India, Bangladesh Malaysia and the United States. The fun occasion is celebrated on April 8 in some parts of the USA like Ohio, Oberlin while in some areas of Massachusetts USA, it is celebrated on July 30.
