The Indian Government acquired the Hindustan Airport in 1964 and the airport was mostly used for Defence purposes. In 1980s, the airport started running domestic commercial flights and more than a decade later it started running international flights in 1997. Ever since the airport had been established it has under gone through many expansions and upgrades to keep up with the rising air traffic in the city. The airports last operating was at a level of 7.5 million.
The airport is located at the site of HAL's Research and Development Operations. It manufactures aircraft for the Indian Air Force fleet consists. The HAL airport's operations were taken over by the Bengaluru International Airport, and it is used exclusively as a test and research facility.
