Introduction

MBBS is also known as "Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery", and is a course that is pursued to be a doctor. Candidates who have an interest in curing patients and thus serving mankind often take up the course of MBBS. The course is about four-and-a-half years or around 54 months, followed by internship of one year, which becomes five-and-a-half years. After earning the MBBS degree, one moves on to become a physician and can practice as a doctor anywhere in the country. The career is emotionally and intellectually rewarding one.

Individuals can also specialize in any medical field and pursue higher education as well. Many students are interested in studying abroad and also pursuing their career as a doctor or a surgeon out of India.

Admission procedure

To enroll in the college, one has to appear for the entrance exam that is conducted by the Medical Council of India. The entrance exams are conducted at national level, state level and by individual private colleges as well. Candidates have to appear for whichever entrance exam they prefer. One can sit for various entrance exams as there are plenty of colleges. However, many prefer government colleges as the fee is less compared with private colleges.

A centralized system for admission is followed for MBBS, along with individual state-based admission system. Prestigious institutions like the JIPMER, AIIMS and PGI conduct their own entrance exam for MBBS. The National eligibility cum entrance test is conducted by the Dental Council of India and is held for medical and dental courses.

Candidates who have appeared for the entrance exam and scored according to the cut-off marks required by the university are called for admission.

Eligibility criteria

Candidates have to pass their 12th class with minimum 50% marks in subjects like physics, biology and chemistry. For the reserved category, there is a relaxation in the aggregate marks needed. The age of the candidate should be at least 17 years on or before 31st December of that year. Candidates should complete their 10+2 education from a recognized board or university.

Pursuing an MBBS course is very rewarding. Those who love to serve mankind find the career very satisfying. Besides, the pay package is very lucrative even when you work in a hospital, clinic, lab or even have your own private clinic. One can take up a job in any city in the country or even go abroad where many find it easy to find a lucrative job. One can work as a general physician or lab technician while some join the research field and contribute towards new medicines and new technologies. There are plenty of government hospitals and labs where doctors can work.

The career as a doctor is a highly respectable one in the society. Although the job requires sacrifices at some level, the job is highly satisfying and rewarding in terms of respect, pay scale, etc.

One can also pursue higher education and go on to specialize in any field. Many doctors go into research, or want to pursue M.D. or become a surgeon. There are many options open like orthopedics, dermatology, forensic, anesthesia, plastic surgery, ear, nose throat, psychiatry, cardiology, radiology and many more.

Salary

A good doctor can earn around Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 40,000 every month as a beginner. If he has his own clinic, then the monetary gains are much more. With experience, every doctor begins to earn substantially well. Within a few years, income rises to about Rs. 100,000 every month.
