Shimla Heritage



Shimla heritage sites offer a rare glimpse to the erstwhile glory of the British Raj. The Shimla heritage takes you way back to an age old history.

This page gives you a brief on the various heritage buildings of Shimla.

Some Shimla heritage buildings are:
  • Viceregal Lodge- This heritage building of Shimla is located on the Observatory hill. This is also known as the Rashtrapati Niwas. It was originally the home of Lord Dufferin, the Viceroy of India. The lodge has got facilities for huge kitchen, laundry, boilers for central heating and running hot and cold water facility in the bathrooms. This lodge has also a library.
  • Georgian mansion- This elegant mansion situated on the Summer hills built in the Georgian style was owned by Rajkumari Amrit Kaur. Gandhiji once stayed in this mansion.
  • Raj Bhawan- This is situated at Chota Shimla and is resided by Governor of Himachal Pradesh. Previously it was known as the Barnes Court.
  • Christ Church- Also known to be the second oldest church in North India, is a major Shimla heritage site. This beautiful church, has got extensive stained glass windows of the ancient time.
  • State museum- This museum consists of the most wonderful paintings of Himachal Pradesh. Besides this museum also has got an extensive collection of handicrafts, marvelous stone carved figures and textiles of Himachal Pradesh.
  • Gaiety Theatre- This theatre is one of Shimla's oldest heritage building. A number of noted plays have been performed in this theatre. This was also called the Amateur Dramatic club. Eminent theatrical personalities like Prithvi Raj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Manohar Singh, Nasseerudin Shah and so on have performed on the stage of this age old heritage of Shimla.
  • Wood Ville- This heritage site of Shimla is located in eastern Shimla. This building has now become a hotel named as Wood Ville Palace Hotel. This was originally the home of the commander-in-chief General Sir William Rose Mansfield.
  • Ellerslie- This building is actually the building of the Himachal Pradesh secretariat and is a heritage of Shimla.
