History of Teej Festival



According to Hindu mythology Teej is an occasion for the married ladies and girls dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati, which is celebrated on the third day after the new moon in the Hindu month of Shravan. Teej is celebrated by married women praying for their happy married life and also unmarried girls pray for their best match. It is widely celebrated all over the country but Teej in Rajasthan is celebrated with great excitement and enthusiasm.

Apart from the mythological reason one more reason of the grand Teej celebration in Rajasthan is the long awaited monsoon, which arrives in the same month of that of Teej rejuvenates the lands of Rajasthan. Teej is celebrated by organizing fairs all around. One such fair is organized in Jaipur.

The Teej Fair is organized by the locals of Rajasthan collaborating with the Department of Tourism. It is famously known as the 'Saawan mela'. At this particular time, many crafts markets & exhibitions and food bazaars bloom up for the people. Any celebration in Rajasthan is incomplete without cultural folk programs. There is singing, dancing, dramas and other festivities as well.

On this very day, women and girls dress up to their best in traditional attire and ornaments. Females put pretty designs of Mehandi (henna) on hands a day before or on the same day. In these fairs several unique and entertaining competitions are organized such as turban tying, mehandi design.

These fairs mainly begin early in the evening and continue till the night. Out of all the attractions of the Teej fair, beautifully decorated swings are the main ones. Women and girls swing on the swings singing traditional songs. Cultural programs take place in these fairs, where folk dance and song performances are seen by famous artists. Also there are various handicrafts and handloom stalls setup where people get the glimpse of the talent of the rural artisans. Another main aspect of this fair is the colorful puppet show which is enjoyed by one and all.
