According to the 2011 Census, the total population of Nagaland is 1,980,602. Previously in the 2001 Census the total population was 1,990,036. From the entire population of Nagaland, the male population is 1,025,707 and the female population is 954,895. The population growth since the last ten years was -0.47 percent and the population of the state forms 0.16 percent of the entire population in India. Nagaland has an area of 16,579 sq. km with a Density of 119 per sq km.

The Sex Ratio in Nagaland is 931 for each 1000 male and has increased from 909 per 1000 males since the last census in 2001. The child sex ratio is 944 per 1000 males and has also increased as compared to 926 in the last census in 2001. Nagaland has a Literacy rate of 80.11 percent, with male literacy at 83.29 percent and female literacy at 76.69 percent. In figures, the total literates in Nagaland are 1,357,579 out of which the males are 731,796 and females are 625,783 respectively.
