The coal requirement for many of these plants are met by Coal India Ltd. Coal is brought in from various parts of Orissa as well as states like Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. These are brought to the plants through rail route, sea route or via roads.

Steps taken by State Government

Power production requires visionary steps and proper planning on the part of Government. The Tamil Nadu Government is well aware of this. In recent years, the state government has taken several steps to ensure increased electricity generation. It has also thought of other ways to help the power production sector.

The Tamil Nadu Government has thought of utilizing the ports at Chennai, Ennore and Tuticorin. This will help the transportation of coal to the Tamil Nadu Power plants.
