India is home to several rivers that flow in different directions. They majorly flow in two directions- East and West. The east-flowing rivers flow towards the Bay of Bengal and the west-flowing rivers flow towards the Arabian sea. According to the available data, 77% of the total drainage area of India flows towards the Bay of Bengal, and the rest of 23% flow towards the Arabian Sea.

The east-flowing rivers of India are Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, Cauvery, Penneru, Penneiyar, Vaigai, and Subarnarekha.

The west-flowing rivers of India are Narmada, Tapi, Mahi, Sabarmati, Luni, Tawa, and Sarasvati.

The west-flowing rivers of India are:

Narmada

The Narmada river is located in Madhya Pradesh. It originated from the Maikala range near Amarkantak. It flows through the states of Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. It is also known as the Rewa River. Maheshwar Dam, Sardar Sarovar Dam, and Indira Gandhi Sagar Dam are major Hydro Power Projects of this Dam. The tributaries of the Narmada River are Kolar, Shakkar, Dudhi, Tawa and Hiran rivers. It is also the largest west-flowing river in peninsular India. It flows over a length of 1312 km before it enters the Arabian sea.

Tapi

The Tapi or Tapti river is also located in Madhya Pradesh. It is the second-largest river in peninsular India that flows westwards. It has a length of 724 Km. It originates from the Multai river forest and flows through Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. The tributaries of the Tapi river are Suki, Gomai, Arunavati, Vaghur, Amravati, Purna, Mona, and Sipna. The major projects that took place on this river were Kakrapar Dam, Ukai Dam, and Girna Dam.

Mahi

The Mahi river originates from the Dhar district of Madya Pradesh. Flowing through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, this river drain into the Gulf of Cambay. This river flow through to a length of 583 Km. The major Hydro Projects on this river were Mahi Bajaj Sagar Dam and Kadana Dam.

Sabarmati

Sabarmati river flows through the Indian states of Rajasthan and Gujarat. With a length of 371 Km, it comprises two streams of water- Sabar, and Hathimati. Originating from Tepur in the Udaipur district of Rajasthan, the major tributaries of this river include Wakal, Hathimati, Vatrak, and Sei. Sabarmati reservoir, Hathmati reservoir, and Meshwo reservoir project are some of the important projects on this river.

Luni

Luni is said to be an endorheic lake. It means it does not allow its water to flow into the sea. It originates near Ajmer from Pushkar Valley which is the Western slopes of the Aravalli ranges. This river is also known as Sagarmati and it flows to a length of 495 Km.

Tawa

The Tawa river is the longest tributary of the Narmada river. It rises from the Satpura Range of Betul in Madhya Pradesh. It has a length of 117 Km. Tawa Dam is constructed on this river.

Saraswati

Originating from the Shimoga district of Karnataka, Saravati is an important west-flowing river. It drains a catchment area of 2209 sq. km. This 128 Km long river is also known for creating the famous Jog Falls.
