North India States

The Northern part of India is endowed with immense topographical diversity, historical monuments, distinct cultures, wildlife parks and sanctuaries, holy temples and rivers along with diversified climatic conditions. A number of popular hill stations are situated in Northern India. It shares its borders with countries like; Pakistan, China, Nepal and Bhutan.

The North Indian states are the most frequented tourist destinations in the country. Travellers from different parts of the country flock to places like Shimla, Nainital, Dharamshala, Dehradun etc to beat the heat during the summer months.

Delhi is a Union Territory situated in the northern part of India. It is the second-largest city by population and the largest metropolitan city by area in India. The city is known officially as the National Capital Territory of Delhi. It is governed by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Haryana is a state situated in North India. It shares its borders with Punjab and Himachal Pradesh in the north, Rajasthan in the west and south and Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh in the east. Haryana is surrounded by Delhi on the northern, western and southern borders. Also, quite a sizable portion of Haryana comes under the purview of the National Capital Region. At present, the state is being governed by Chief Minister Manohar Lal. He belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is one of the most popular states in Northern India. It is spread over an area of 55,673 km2. It shares its borders with Jammu and Kashmir in the north, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in the south, Punjab in the west and south-west and Uttarakhand in the south-east. Himachal Pradesh in literal terms means Region of snowy mountains. It is currently being governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party under Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur.

Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir is situated in the northernmost part of India. Earlier, enjoying the status of a state, it was made a union territory in 2019. Jammu and Kashmir abound in natural splendor mostly because of its geographic location. Nestled quietly in the Himalayan Mountains this state in India is filled with mountainous landscapes and numerous shrines. Jammu and Kashmir share its border with Himachal Pradesh and Punjab in the south and the People's Republic of China in the north and east. Uttarakhand is a state located in northern India. It was formerly known as Uttaranchal and was carved out of the north-western districts of Uttar Pradesh and the adjoining Himalayan Ranges on 9 November 2000. It is also called the Land of Gods because of the numerous holy Hindu temples found across the different cities in the state. Uttarakhand shares its borders with Nepal in the east, the Tibet Autonomous Region in the north, Uttar Pradesh in the south, Haryana in the west and Himachal Pradesh in the North West. Currently, Pushkar Singh Dhami of the Bharatiya Janata Party is serving as the Chief Minister of the state.

Punjab is another significant state situated in the northwest part of India. It is one of the most naturally blessed states in the country. Punjab shares its borders with Jammu and Kashmir in the north, Himachal Pradesh in the east, Haryana in the south and Pakistan in the west. Chandigarh serves as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. In March 2022, Bhagwant Mann became the Chief Minister of the State and it is currently under the rule of the Aam Aadmi Party.

Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh popularly known as U.P, is a state situated in northern India. Uttar Pradesh is bordered by Nepal and the Indian states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. It is the most populated state in India with a population of almost 240 million people. It is also known as the cultural cradle of India since it is believed to be the birthplace of Hinduism. At present, it is governed by the Bhartiya Janta Party under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The reorganisation of the state of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 divided the state into two union territories. One of them is Ladakh. It consists of two districts: Leh and Kargil. It is bordered by the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh and the Tibet Autonomous Region. The Union Territory of Ladakh is being governed by Lieutenant Governor Radha Krishna Mathur.
