Jorhat, deriving its name from the couple of marts namely Chowkihut and Macharhut, is a town in Jorhat district in the state of Assam.

Jorhat Parliamentary Constituency has a population of 66,450 (2001 census). Males comprise 55% of the total population while females constitute the rest of 45%.

Bijoy Krishna Handuqui has been winning consecutively for INC from Jorhat Parliamentary Constituency for the last 5 times. Tarun Gogoi, the Chief Minister of Assam won from this center in 1971 and 1977.

The town of Jorhat is famous for tea industry. Dhekiakhowa Barnamghar, Lachit Borphukan’s Maidam, Chandrakanta Handique Bhavan and Gibon Wildlife Sanctuary are some of the popular attractions in Jorhat.
