Dindigul is a well known city in Tamil Nadu. It is famous for its historic hill fort, traditional lock making industry, which is still a primary source of income for many busy markets and also for its excellent biryani. The name Dindigul is thought to have been derived from the Tamil words Thindu and Kal which in turn represent the large rock hill that rises out of the city. History & Culture
Dindigul has a past that stretches back many centuries. What we see today is a result of the fact that over the years it was ruled by many powerful kingdoms which at different points in time were very strategic for rulers. Each of these rulers left in their wake structures, practices and cultures which we still see and live today.
During the early years the area was ruled by the Pandya kings. They in turn contributed to the growth of trade, agriculture and religion. Later the Cholas also had a hold on the region for some time which then passed out of their control.
During the 17th century which was a very important time in the city’s history we see the rise of the Madurai Nayaks. They in that time founded the famous Dindigul Fort on the large rock hill which towers over the city. Later on Dindigul fell into the hands of Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan. They improved the fort which they used as a key military base in South India. After the Anglo Mysore Wars the British East India Company took over Dindigul. During British rule the city grew to become a preeminent center for trade and administration.
