The southern state of Tamil Nadu is the 11th largest state area-wise, and seventh most populous state in India. It is the second largest economy in the country and is ranked 6th in India in Human Development Index (HDI) 2011.

In Tamil Nadu lok sabha elections 2019, this state sends 39 members to the lower house of the Parliament or Lok Sabha which is the fourth highest in India. Thus, Tamil Nadu plays a crucial role in the government formation at the centre. Of the 39 parliamentary constituencies, seven are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC).

Parliamentary Seats

Tamil Nadu elects 39 members to the Lok Sabha and 18 members to the Rajya Sabha. The state had a bicameral legislature till 1986, but currently it is unicameral. The total strength of the state legislature is 234. Some important constituencies include North, South and Central Chennai, Salem, Sriperumbudur, Coimbatore, and Erode.

Major Political Parties

The national-level parties active in Tamil Nadu election are:
  • Indian National Congress (INC)
  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
  • Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)
  • Communist Party of India (CPI)
  • Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]
Regional parties which play a major role in the state politics are:
  • All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)
  • Desia Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK)
  • Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)
  • Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK)
  • Manithaneya Makkal Katchi
  • Puthiya Tamizagam
  • All India Forward Bloc
  • Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi
Election History

In the elections to the state legislative assembly, INC was victorious from 1947 to 1967. However, since 1967 Dravidian parties began to dominate state politics. DMK was the first Dravidian party to assume power in 1967, and remained in power till 1977. Differences within DMK led to the formation of AIADMK by M.G. Ramachandran. He led his party to victory in the 1977, 1980 and 1984 assembly elections. DMK won the 1989 elections but could not complete its full term. In 1991 elections, AIADMK emerged victorious. Since then, DMK has won the 1996 and 2006 assembly elections while AIADMK returned to power in 2001 and 2011. In 2011 elections, AIADMK and its allies won 203 seats out of 234 seats, making J. Jayalalithaa the CM. Since the 1990s caste based parties have gained prominence in the state and are slowly challenging the dominance of DMK and AIADMK. In the elections to the Lok Sabha till 1962, INC was the leading party. But its performance dropped sharply in the 1967 while this election marked the rise of the DMK. The AIADMK made its presence felt in 1977. INC made a comeback in the 1984 elections and gave a steady performance in 1989 and 1991. But in 1999 elections INC won only two seats. BJP won four seats, its best performance in the state till date. In 2004, the main battle was between DMK and INC while in 2009 it was between DMK and AIADMK. It was the same for the poll in 2014.
