Salem is located between 11° 14' and 2° 53' North Latitudes and between 77° 44' and 78° 50' East Longitudes. It covers the geographical area of 5205 Sq. km and has the total population of 30,16,346 including 15,63,633 males and 14,52,713 Females.

Some of the important food crops grown in Salem district are paddy, cholam, cumbu, redgram, greengram, blackgram, horsegram, turmeric, sugarcane, mango, bannana, tapiaco, groundnut and gingelly.Some of the important industries are Salem Steel Plant, Salem Diary, L.S.P.
