​ Namakkal’s history goes back many centuries. In the centre of Tamil Nadu it came under the rule of many great South Indian kingdoms over the years. Each which left their mark on the city’s past and culture.

The early Cholas, Pandyas, then the Vijayanagara Empire dominated this area; these rulers also promoted agriculture, trade and temple development. Today many of the ancient temples that were built at that time still see great devotees’ activity.

The noted Namakkal Fort was built out in the 17th century during the time of the Madurai Nayaks. Perched on top of a large rock hill the fort served as a military base which also functioned as a watch tower for the area. Also at different points in history the fort was controlled by Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan and the British.

Today in the city what you will see is our Fort which has become a major tourist attraction.
