Tiruvarur district was formed on 1st January 1997. It is located between 10 °20' and 11 °07' Latitude (N-S) and between 79 °15' And 79 ° 45' Longitude (E-W). It covers the geographical area of 2097.09 Sq. km and has the total population of 11,69,474 including 5,80,784 males and 5,88,690 females.

Some of the crops grown in Tiruvarur district are rice, pulses, sugarcane, groundnut, gingelly, and cotton. People of the district are also engaged in dairy , fishery and handloom industry.
