Saif Ali Khan is an award-winning and versatile actor of Bollywood. Saif was born on 16th August, 1970 in New Delhi, India to a prestigious and affluent family. Born into the family of the Nawabs of Pataudi, his father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, and grandfather Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, were both former captains of the Indian cricket team. His mother, Sharmila Tagore and sister, Soha Ali Khan are both well-known actresses, while his other sister, Saba Ali Khan is a talented jewelry designer.
Completing his education at Winchester College in England, Saif decided to take up acting as a career instead of cricket. Saif Ali Khan's elite family background didn't help him much in building his acting career, and he had to struggle a lot to gain recognition. He made his Bollywood debut with Parampara (1992) but it was his next film that won him the Filmfare Best Debut Award, namely Aashiq Awara (1993). His first major hit was Yeh Dillagi (1994), opposite Kajol and Akshay Kumar, however, the films that came after that failed at the box office. But apart from these films, there were movies that did exceptionally well, off and on, like Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994), Kachche Dhaage (1999), Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United (1999), Kya Kehna (2000).
Saif's 'never-say-die' spirit brought his solo-acts into the limelight, making directors and producers take note of this talented star. With box-office successes that won him numerous awards, films like Farhan Akhtar's superhit, Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Kal Ho Na Ho (2003), Hum Tum (2004), and Salaam Namaste (2005), Parineeta (2005) did wonders to his career. Saif's versatility was proved through his highly acclaimed negative roles and off-beat films like Ek Hasina Thi (2004), Being Cyrus (2006), and in the Indian adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello- Omkara (2006), playing a villainous role as the character of Ishwar 'Langda' Tyagi. Saif's upcoming films include Tara Rum Pum, Race, and Tashan.
Saif Ali Khan is also a skilled guitar player and singer performing live at rock concerts. His most notable and recent jam session was in 2006, with rock-band Parikrama live on stage, held at New Delhi. Saif has also modeled for, done commercials, as well as, has been the brand ambassador for major products such as Lays, Colgate Max Fresh, Lenovo, Seagram's Royal Stag, Chevrolet Aveo, Cream Bell, Provogue and Asian Paints.
Although his career seems to be on high, as with many other personalities, Saif Ali Khan too has been subject to a few controversial issues in his personal life. He wedded actress Amrita Singh but it was followed by their bitter and sudden divorce. This lead to a short-spanned love affair with Italian girlfriend Rosa, and with that coming to an end too, Saif is presently single. The controversial 'Black Buck' case also tarnished Saif's image somewhat, but these drawbacks have not been able to put a halt to this indomitable spirit.
Saif Ali Khan has received many Film Awards and nominations for his outstanding contributions to Bollywood, some of which are:
