A.K. Antony or Arackaparambil Kurien Antony is an Indian politician who is presently serving as Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. The other positions he holds are Chairman of the Disciplinary Action Committee of the All India Congress Committee, Congress Working Committee and member of the Central Election Committee.

A.K. Antony also served as the Defence Minister of India and the Chief Minister of Kerala.

Personal Life

A.K. Antony was born on 28 December 1940 at Cherthala, near Alleppey in Travancore, to Arackaparambil Kurien Pillai and Aleykutty Kurian. He did many odd jobs to support his education after his father passed away in 1959. He married Elizabeth, a Kerala High Court lawyer. They have two sons, Anil Antony and Ajith Antony.

Political Career

A.K. Antony started his political career when he was a student leader in Cherthala Taluk as an activist of Kerala Students Union (KSU). He was guided by M. A. John. In 1966, he became the youngest president of Kerala Students Union. Before he became the General Secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC), he was associated with Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

His first phase in office started on 27 April 1977 and lasted till 27 October 1978. Due to some differences with the party, he formed his own party Congress (A). However, in 1982, he reconciled and rejoined the party and became a member in 1984. He held many portfolios including Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, Minister for Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution.

A.K. Antony served three terms as chief minister. A.K. Antony is known for taking many initiatives in different fields like higher education, science and biotechnology and Information Technology. He is often referred as Mr Clean in the Indian politics.
