Common Entrance Test - (CAT) information

The Common Entrance test is held to get admission in the top B schools in India and is the main entrance exam. The CAT is an all India test held by the IIMs that is considered as the most prestigious school in India. Candidates who want to pursue post graduate level management degree from the IIMs appears for the test. On the scores one gets in the CAT, the candidates are short listed and called for group discussions and personal interview. Candidates have to study the syllabus for the entrance exam that comprise of Quantitative ability and data interpretation and verbal ability and logical reasoning. The entrance exam will be held for 2 hours and 15 minutes and 15 minutes more for tutorials.

The entrance exam is a computer based online test of multiple choice that is focused on given syllabus and is also negatively marked for wrong answers. There are in fact three sections that need to be covered like the arithmetical problem solving, logical reasoning, English language skills, statistics, geometry, etc.

Eligibility

To be eligible for appearing for the CAT, the candidate should have a Bachelor's degree with 50% marks or even equivalent CGPA. For the SC and the ST candidates, the marks required are 45%. Those who have completed their graduation in any discipline can apply and also those who are awaiting their results can also apply.

How to apply

The candidates have to buy the CAT forms and register online. It is important that the candidates have an email ID as well. The forms and brochures can be obtained from Axis bank by paying Rs. 14, 00. Candidates should fill the pay-in-slip at the Axis branch and get two copies of the slip. Candidates can find the voucher number at the scratch off area and retain the number. One can apply either online or offline. There are a few steps for the online procedure and the candidate is supposed to know about the rules for online application.

Important dates for the CAT

The vouchers are provided in the month of August 2012. The last date of sale will be in the last week of October 2012. The registration for the CAT will start in Mid August 2012 and the end of registration date will be on the 1st week of October 2012. The main test dates will be approximately on the 4th week of October 2012 to 4th week of November 2012. The results will be declared on 2nd week of January 2013.
