About the Aspirational Districts Programme

In January 2018, NITI Aayog announced "Transformation of Aspirational Districts" programme which aims to quickly transform and uplift 101 backward districts in India in terms of basic amenities, infrastructure facilities, health facilities, standards of living, etc. This programme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an initiative towards the growth of these aspirational districts.

Under this programme, NITI Aayog has launched the baseline rankings for 101 aspirational districts across India. After consultation with the stakeholders, NITI Aayog has come out with 49 performance indicators which will help them to rank the progress of these 101 districts in question. The primary areas of focus in this programme are Health & Nutrition, Agriculture & Water Resources, Education, Financial Inclusion & Skill Development and Basic Infrastructure which will help the Government to decide which district has performed better under this programme.

Mewat, a district in Haryana, is ranked the lowest among all the backward districts while Andhra Pradesh's Vizianagaram has performed excellently under this programme. This is an opportunity for these backward districts to come at par with the other growing districts in India.

NITI Aayog has declared that it will come out with rankings of these districts by April 2018. The districts will be ranked on the basis of their performance in this programme. This programme believes in utilizing the potential of the people living in these districts so that they can actively participate in the flourishing economy.

NITI Aayog, along with the Government of Andhra Pradesh, has designed a dashboard to monitor the progress of these districts in real-time. On March 23, 2018, a workshop was organized by NITI Aayog to impart dashboard training to the representatives of these 101 districts. From April 2018 onwards, these districts will enter their data and from beginning May 2018, the districts will be ranked based on the incremental progress made. The public will have access to this dashboard to view the progress of these aspirational districts.

Through this programme, the Government is trying to raise the standards of living of its citizens and ensuring inclusive growth for all - SabkaSaath, SabkaVikas.
