Situated in northwest Madhya Pradesh, the Shajapur District lies between latitudes 32"06' and 24" 19' North and longitude 75" 41' and 77" 02' East. Headquartered at the town of Shajapur, which was named after the Mughal emperor Shahjahan.

Shajapur has a population of 15,12,353 (according to 2011 Census of India), and covers 6,195 sq. km. The average literacy rate is slightly above 70%, and the sex ratio is 939 females for every 1,000 males.

Before 2013, the district was larger in area. This changed when the 51st district, called Agar-Malwa, was carved out it after the state government's order.
