About
Rangareddy district is located in the centre of Telangana being surrounded by the southern and western parts of Hyderabad and is named after the former Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, Congress leader and renowned figure Vengalrao Rangareddy, back in 1978. Rangareddy is today one of the most vibrant districts in Telangana, not for the expansion of agricultural land or forest, but because it has unknowingly become a part of the tech and business boom of Hyderabad. It is an urban-rural, highly modern, and intensely traditional neighborhood, which includes Gachibowli, Financial District, Shamshabad and parts of HITEC City.
Rangareddy is surrounded by Hyderabad district on the north-east, the Vikarabad district on the west, Mahabubnagar district on the south and Medchal-Malkajgiri and Nalgonda on the other borders and hence has a strategic location in the state. It is the real entry point to Hyderabad as it is home to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and this makes transportation easy for the people.
History & Culture
The present Rangareddy area has a long and complex history. It was a part of the erstwhile Hyderabad State which was ruled by Qutb Shahis for centuries and subsequently by Nizams of Hyderabad till the Police Action of 1948, when it became a part of independent India. This area was converted into a district in 1978 when Andhra Pradesh was established and was divided from the larger district primarily to oversee the exploding population of the region around Hyderabad city. In 2016 after the creation of Telangana as a separate state, the district was also carved up and parts of the area were designated as new Vikarabad and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts, leaving today's Rangareddy area smaller in size but with a much stronger identity.
The district has a cultural interface of Telugu and Deccani people which gives it a rich cultural taste along with diversities of traditions. Its population is a blend of the history of the old Hyderabad State with the widespread use of the Telugu language, Urdu, Hindi and the use of smaller communities of Marathi and Kannada speakers.
Festivals here include Bonalu, a traditional Telangana festival celebrated in honour of the goddess and Bathukamma, the harvest festival, as well as Ramzan and Muharram, which have a Nizami connection. Although the urban centres take a cosmopolitan, modern lifestyle, the rural areas still retain older traditions such as the jatras, folk theatre and agricultural festivals which are based on the sowing and harvest calendar. It is a pride for the locals that Dr. Marri Channa Reddy, the former Governor of several Indian states and twice Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, was born in Peddamangalaram village in this district.
Economy
The economy of Rangareddy is a unique case in comparison to most of the Indian districts – it is neither an agrarian nor an industrial economy. Rather, it acts as an almost satellite economic zone of Hyderabad.
Government Sector: The district has a large number of jobs in government offices, both at the state and central government level, as it is close to the state capital. The area has a large concentration of administrative offices, public sector undertakings and various departments of the Telangana government, which offer a steady supply of jobs for a large population.
Public Sector: There are several public sector enterprises and institutions based in Rangareddy, such as those associated with the defence sector, research and infrastructure. Its proximity to the airport and high-traffic roads has also attracted public transport companies and logistics companies that are associated with the state.
Services Sector: Rangareddy performs really well in this sector and the role of companies along with technological development has been the reason for this growth in the economy. Companies such as some of the largest technology and consulting companies in the world, as well as a flourishing pharmaceutical and biotech corridor, are located in areas like Gachibowli and Financial District. This has placed the district among the wealthier ones in the nation over the past few years and technology and business services now account for the district's most significant economic activity.
Hospitality and aviation-related services have also been gaining significant momentum due to the international airport at Shamshabad and real estate and construction are another key industry as housing and commercial space growth continues in the district's urban belt.
Tourism
Ramoji Film City is one of the world's largest integrated film studio complexes and offers theme-park style attractions, film sets and guided tours drawing people from all over the country.
The ruins of an ancient Shiva Temple with old fortifications and buildings dating back more than 500 years are found in Maheshwaram and it is also a popular pilgrimage centre. It also includes the ruins from the Bhakta Ramdas times and is one of the most visited in this region that is also famous for its unique practice of the devotees revolving around the temple 108 times in prayer – popularly referred to as the "Visa Balaji temple".
The outer environment and rocks of Golconda are rugged and scenic, with several prominent granite boulder formations like those found in the Deccan plateau, which can be seen from the district and provide an ideal setting for short visits and for photography.
Gandipet (Osman Sagar Lake) — a reservoir situated on the outskirts, used to escape to the greenery and the water's edge that is close to the city during weekends.
However, there are other popular destinations aside from these and Rangareddy is also for those who are willing to head a little bit off the beaten track. Vattinagulapally and other rocky outcrops, located around the outer ring road, are among the best sunset spots around Hyderabad that are very popular with trekking and photography groups.
Aramgarh and the hillocks around Chandrayangutta-adjacent areas; this is a land of boulder-strewn terrain, set far removed from the glass towers of the IT corridor, just a few kilometres away. The district's numerous small water bodies and irrigation tanks, spread throughout the rural mandals also attract bird watchers in the winter months, when birds migrating from cold parts of the world pause to rest in the wetlands.
But for those wishing to travel at a more leisurely pace, the district's many temples built during the Deccan era (1000 to 1500) in the villages not much visited in comparison to the more famous ones provide a glimpse into the district's architectural style and structures that are often hidden away in small, unmarked stepwells and carved pillars. This combination of high and low profile corners together makes Rangareddy a well-balanced tourist destination rather than a one-sided affair.
Demographics
As per the last complete Census in 2011, the population of Rangareddy was around 24,26,243, consisting of about 12,43,967 males and 11,82,276 females. The literacy rate was 71.88%, which is quite high when compared with the national average; the district's many educational institutions helped with this sense of being fairly well-educated.
The language of the district is overwhelmingly Telugu, although Urdu is spoken as well, as a result of the region's Nizami history. Hindi, English and smaller communities of people who speak Marathi and Kannada give Hindi a further colour. Hindi is also steadily spoken by migrants from other states in the urban and IT-heavy pockets. Hyderabad's suburbs are expanding into once purely rural areas and the population is becoming increasingly urban.
As a whole these numbers tell the tale of a district in transition. While Rangareddy was once a quiet part of Hyderabad, it has become a population centre in its own right as much the product of migration and urbanization as it was of its original agrarian roots. Over the last few years, the city has seen a steady rise of professionals from the IT, Pharma and allied sectors, who have all moved to the city from all over Telangana and other states adding another layer to the city's demographic makeup, which was largely rural two decades ago. This mix of long-settled local population and newer migrants leads to a younger, more mobile and more linguistically diverse district than can be captured by the 2011 figures alone and is likely to continue to be so as Hyderabad's urban extension spreads deeper into Rangareddy's mandals.
Administration
The district of Rangareddy is divided into 5 revenue divisions and 27 revenue mandals with 62 Mandal Praja Parishads under their control. There are 1,069 Gram Panchayats and 7 Municipalities and 2 Municipal Corporations for urban self-governance at village level. There are also 602 villages in total in the district which are divided across the various mandals, from small hamlets to larger villages and this has been expanded significantly with the expansion of Hyderabad's urban area.
The district is administered by the district collector's office at district headquarters and he is responsible for revenue administration, law and order and coordination between mandals and elected representatives at the panchayat, mandal and town level for local governance and development work.
