Dhondo Keshav Karve (Awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1958)
Karve was a social reformer and educator. He played a vital role in the upliftment of women in the country. He worked in the fields of remarriage of Hindu widows and also the education of women. He is known to have started many organizations for women development such as the Widow Marriage Association and the Hindu Widows Home. In 1916, he established the Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University.
