C Rajagopalachari (Awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954)

Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, popularly known as Rajaji, was born on December 10, 1878.

He studied law from the Presidency College in Madras (now Chennai) and started his practice in ‘Salem’ in the year 1900.

In the year 1916, he formed the Tamil Scientific Terms Society, an organization that translated scientific terms of chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy and biology into simple Tamil words. Rajagopalchari ji was the Governor General of Independent India from 1948 to 1950. He was the first and last Indian to hold this post. He was the Chief Minister of the Madras Presidency from 1937 to 1939 during the British rule. In independent India, he served as the Chief Minister of the Madras State from 1952 to 1954. He also founded the Swatantra Party.
